1 vegtable peeler
1 pot with lid
1 zester
1 fork
- 4 peeled pears Bosc or Anjou work well
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup apple cider or orange juice
- 1/2 cup maple syrup or honey
- 1 Cinnamon stick
- 2-3 whole star anise
- 3 whole cloves
- 1 vanilla bean, split or 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 zest of orange
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
Prepare the Poaching Liquid:
In a large saucepan, combine water, apple cider (or orange juice), maple syrup (or honey), cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, vanilla bean, orange zest, and ground ginger (if using). Stir to mix.
Poach the Pears:
Place the peeled pears in the saucepan, making sure they’re submerged in the liquid. If they aren’t fully covered except stem, add more water.
Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes, until the pears are tender when pierced with a fork. The time may vary depending on the ripeness and size of the pears.
